Uniform & Dress Code Policy

In accordance with the resolution regarding school uniform or dress code by the Chicago Board of Education, Edward "Iv. Beasley Academic Magnet Center...
...has a legitimate goal of eliminating gang related activities... and providing the children who attend Chicago Public Schools with a safe environment within which to learn; and ...has a legitimate goal of to instill discipline create a positive educational environment... has a legitimate goal of eliminating competition concerning dress and de- emphasizing the socioeconomic differences of students to promote a more effective climate for learning and... a student's dress must not Interfere with the maintenance of a positive teaching and learning climate or compromise reasonable standards of health, safety and decency.
The Local School Council has determined that Edward W. Beasley Academic Magnet Center has established and will enforce a dress code, for all students effective August, 1997. Beasley Academic Center will have a dress code and uniform.

The Edward W. Beasley Academic Magnet Center Uniform and Dress Code is as follows.
  1. Shirts or blouses shall be white, yellow or hunter green. They may be long or short sleeved, with a collar. No emblems or logos are permitted. Under shirts - worn under the shirt must be solid white in color. Shirts or blouses must be buttoned (excluding top button). When wearing a short sleeved shirt or blouse, undershirts must also be short sleeved.

  2. No identified gang symbols are permitted. (The ultimate authority in determining if a symbol, etc. represents gang affiliation will be the Dean of Students, Chicago Police Officers assigned to the school or the principal's designee).

  3. Trousers, slacks, or skirts - must be hunter green in color (denim or sweatpants, jogging pants or spandex, etc., are not acceptable). Also, no carpenter or cargo pants.

  4. Skirt lengths should not be shorter than one inch above the knee.

  5. Sweaters - No sweater shirts. Sweaters must be white, hunter green or yellow. V-neck, pullover or cardigan (with buttons dawn the front). The white shirt must be warn underneath sweaters with collars showing and tucked into trousers, skirts, or slacks.

  6. Shorts - must be no more than one inch above the knee (a are to be worn only after official notice from the administration by bulletin and P.A. announcement).

  7. No open-toed or strapless shoes, clogs or gym shoes that signify any type of gang affiliation are allowed. (the ultimate authority in determining if a symbol, etc represents gang affiliation will be the Dean of Students, Chicago Police Officers assigned to the school or the principal's designee).

  8. Shoes are to be black shoes only. No black gym shoes. The laces should also be black. Laces must be tied at all times. There must be no contrasting stitching or trim of any kind on the shoes; only solid black.

  9. Gym shoes are only allowed to be worn during physical education classes and during intramural program; not during the entire day.

  10. The Performance Arts/Dance Program requires all female students to wear the following for dance: black leotards; black stirrup tights, heavy white socks (to be cut at the seam of the toes); hunter green warm-up pants or shorts may be worn over leotards and tights.

  11. The Performance Arts/Dance Program requires all male students to wear hunter green warm-up suits and heavy white socks (to be cut at the seam of the toes).

  12. Socks can be white, black or hunter green with both being the same color. Female students may wear hosiery, tights or socks. These items must be natural, flesh tone, white, black, hunter green or yellow and both legs must be the same color.

  13. Hair colors are limited to natural shades. Hair styles should be appropriate and not distract from the learning process.

  14. Earrings and/or studs shall be limited to two per ear for female students only. Earrings should be no more than 1 inch in diameter. No body piercing/ jewelry is allowed for either males or females. Students will not be allowed to wear thread, socks, etc., in newly pierced ears during school hours. No adhesive bandages will be allowed on earlobes.

  15. Students will not be allowed to wear sweat suits or jogging attire to school. They must wear their gym or dance attire underneath their uniform or carry them to school.

  16. Male students are not to wear earrings.

  17. No head coverings are to be worn inside the building, including scarves, headbands and sweatbands.

  18. Other items to hold hair in place shall be In a color consistent with the rest of the dress code. Ties or neck scarves, if desired shall be of color consis-tent with the uniform colors which are either white, hunter green or yellow.

  19. Belts must be worn with all pants/slacks having loops. Pants and/or slacks must always be worn at waist level. No pants can be worn with leg or legs up.

  20. Belts or suspenders must be black. Excessively large buckles, studs or other ornaments which can be used as a weapon or construed as gang insignia are not permitted. The ultimate authority in determining if a symbol, etc represents gang affiliation will be the Dean of Students, Chicago Police Officers assigned to the school or the principal's designee.

  21. Key chain, wallet chains, etc. must not be excessively large. Key chains must be kept in pockets.

  22. Clothing must be normal fit without being excessively loose, baggy or tight.

  23. The administration reserves the right to evaluate, Individual cases for Appropriateness.

  24. Students will not be allowed to wear makeup or fingernail polish.

  25. In order for students to participate in special events, field trips and/or activities, a child must be in uniform unless instructed by their instructor to wear other attire.

  26. Violations of the Edward W. Beasley Academic Magnet Center's Uniform and Dress Code will be handled in accordance with the Uniform Discipline Code of the Chicago Public Schools, Group 2-5.

  27. Beasley wear can be worn on field trips and half days with permission from the teacher.


  • All students are expected to be in uniform on the first day of school in September. New students to the Beasley Academic Magnet Center will be given a one week grace period to comply with the uniform and dress code,

  • Uniforms are not available through the school They must be purchased either at SMILE KIDS or SCHOOL BELLES uniform store which are our designated suppliers

  • Parents may purchase uniforms from other suppliers but the uniforms must be identical to SMILE KIDS, SCHOOL BELLES, or ZEMSKIES in Ford City. Plaid attire should only be purchased from SCHOOL BELLES or SMILE KIDS because other suppliers material usually do not match SCHOOL BELLES Or SMILE KIDS specification, thereby causing your child to be out of uniform compliance.

Rights & Responsibilities:  Student Compliance to Uniform Discipline & Dress Code
Students are to adhere to the following rules:
  1. No earrings for male students
  2. No gym shoes are to be worn in the building except in gym class
  3. No hats for boys or girls
  4. No designs in the hair
  5. No skirts or skorts more than 1 inch above the knee
  6. No pant leg or legs worn up
  7. No profanity or inappropriate language is allowed
  8. No sweaters, jackets or coats other than uniform garments are allowed in the classrooms.
  9. No gum in school
  10. No flashing of gang signs
  11. No clothing made of denim material
  12. No pants are to be worn below the waist
  13. No two-toned shoes, only solid black

Procedures for Non-Compliance
The following consequences will be implemented when any student does not conform with the Board Approved Dress Code:
  • 1st offense: Call home for change of clothes and warning.
  • 2nd offense: Call home for change of clothes and send a letter.
  • 3rd offense: Call home for a change of clothes and/or exclude the student from his/her regular school day.
