Discipline
The ultimate form of discipline is self-discipline. Beasley strives to teach students
to be responsible for the choices they make. Discipline is a necessary
part of a child's education. It is a form of guidance that encourages students
to be courteous to their fellow classmates and to all adults who come in contact
with them on a daily basis. It provides guidelines for proper student behavior
and a framework for consequences for the choices mode by the student.
Beasley has adopted an Assertive Discipline Program. This approach is
a systematic way of setting rules in advance, and rewarding appropriate behavior.
Teachers will set firm, consistent limits, while at the same time remaining
aware of the student's needs for support. Incentives may be provided
to encourage students to behave in appropriate ways. Students who behave
appropriately are rewarded in various ways for their good conduct.
Disciplinary action will be initiated when a student exhibits inappropriate
behavior. The disciplinary action taken, will be based on the seriousness of
the infraction, and the number of prior infractions as determined by the Chicago
Board of Education's Uniform Discipline Code and Zero Tolerance
Policy.
Any serious or repeated misconduct is cause for a parent conference and/
or suspension.
All students are expected to:
- Follow the Beasley Academic Center School-Wide Student Rules.
- Observe the Lunchroom Procedures and Rules.
- Adhere to classroom procedures and rules.
- Move in silence during a fire or disaster drill.
- Bring the necessary school supplies to function in a learning environment.
- Walk on the second square, when passing in the corridor, one behind the
other or in pairs when asked to do so by the adult in charge.
- Exhibit respect for adult authority figure in charge at any given time.
- Show respect for members of their own peer group.
Discipline Referral Procedure
- The teacher observes unsatisfactory student behavior and completes a Discipline
Referral Form placing a small check mark alongside inappropriate
behavior(s) on the form. The form should be sent to the parent and the
teacher should keep a copy.
- The Discipline Referral Form is given to the student to take home for
a parent's or guardian's signature. The parent or guardian signs the Discipline Referral Form and returns it to the teacher. The parent is
aware of the infraction and the inappropriate behavior.
If a parent conference is requested, the teacher will complete a Parent/Teacher
Conference Request Form indicating the date and time of the conference. The Parent/
Teacher Request Form is sent home via the student. The teacher maintains
copies of both forms in the student's confidential folder.
- If the Discipline Referral Form is not returned, the teacher should contact the
parent via telephone or U.S. mail to inform the parent 0f the situation. If at
that time the teacher has a need for a conference, the teacher will initiate and
issues a request for a Parent/Teacher conference sending a copy of the request
and the initial Discipline Referral Form to the designated Individual for that
grade level
- If a response is still not generated, the designated individual for that
grade level will issue an official Misconduct Report, requesting a
formal Parent/Teacher or Administrator conference.
- Teachers may issue a detention for misbehavior.
Detention
A.M. Detention will be at the discretion o/the homeroom or resource instructor
from 6:55 a.m. - 7:50 a.m. Students arriving late will NOT be allowed to serve
detention. They will be rescheduled one time. Failure to serve detention in a timely
fashion incurs the risk of suspension from school.
Note: The Uniform Code is the foundation of the Assertive Discipline Program of
the Beasley Academic Center. Therefore, these above procedures follow the spirit
of the Uniform Discipline Code and neither substitutes for nor negates any of its
provisions or interest.
