Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) Music Lunch Program
In an attempt to improve student performance in the
lunch, Spanish, reading, and music programs, student will
practice good restaurant etiquette, will enjoy conversation
with grade appropriate background music selected by the
Fine Arts and Foreign Language Departments, and will
engage in the DEAR silent reading activity after eating
lunch while waiting to be picked up by the classroom
teachers.
This program has been in the pilot stage for two years. In
year one, it was piloted in grades two through eight. The
following format has been approved and funded by the
administration.
(10:55 A.M. - 11:20A.M.) AND (11:35 A.M. - 12:00 Noon)-
Using the portage microphone and tape player, lunch
room super-vising staff will play the appropriate grade
level Spanish and/or music tapes.
- Students will be escorted in and seated at assigned
lunchroom tables by their classroom teachers after
having been taken to wash-room recess.
- Students will be supervised as they get their lunches,
eat, and converse with classmates.
- Using student provided reading materials and/or Grade
Level Book Basket selections, students will engage in
silent reading DEAR activity.
Note: Suggestions/ideas for ongoing improvement of the program
are welcomed from all faculty, staff, and parents.
