Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) Music Lunch Program

In an attempt to improve student performance in the lunch, Spanish, reading, and music programs, student will practice good restaurant etiquette, will enjoy conversation with grade appropriate background music selected by the Fine Arts and Foreign Language Departments, and will engage in the DEAR silent reading activity after eating lunch while waiting to be picked up by the classroom teachers.

This program has been in the pilot stage for two years. In year one, it was piloted in grades two through eight. The following format has been approved and funded by the administration.

(10:55 A.M. - 11:20A.M.) AND (11:35 A.M. - 12:00 Noon)
  • Using the portage microphone and tape player, lunch room super-vising staff will play the appropriate grade level Spanish and/or music tapes.

  • Students will be escorted in and seated at assigned lunchroom tables by their classroom teachers after having been taken to wash-room recess.

  • Students will be supervised as they get their lunches, eat, and converse with classmates.

  • Using student provided reading materials and/or Grade Level Book Basket selections, students will engage in silent reading DEAR activity.

Note: Suggestions/ideas for ongoing improvement of the program are welcomed from all faculty, staff, and parents.
